Although the art of pile weaving is often considered to have been first perfected by the tribes of Central Asia, there have been few authoritative studies made of this traditional folk art form. The nomadic lifestyle of the weavers left behind little evidence to enable scholars to identify the patterns or ascertain the dates of the large number of carpets woven in Central Asia over the last three centuries.
